Frontier Model

The largest, most capable AI models at the leading edge of the field - the highest-performing and the most expensive to run per token.

A frontier model is one of the most advanced models available at a given moment, typically the biggest and most capable from a major provider. They set the ceiling on what AI can do and command premium pricing, so sending every request to a frontier model is often far more expensive than the task actually requires.

Much of token optimization is about matching each request to the smallest model that can do the job and reserving frontier models for the work that genuinely needs them. Seeing which traffic actually reaches a frontier model - and whether a cheaper one would pass the same policy check - is a practical lever on both cost and risk.
